Carnival Cruise Lines Brings Beloved Dr. Seuss Tales To Life With "Seuss At Sea" - Coming February 2014

Calling all Dr. Seuss Fans! You're in for a real treat...

One ship, two ships, it’s Dr. Seuss on cruise ships! Carnival Cruise Lines has unveiled an exclusive partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises to bring the beloved children’s brand and favorite characters to the line’s fleet of 24 “Fun Ships.” In an industry first, the Carnival Seuss at Sea program will offer a variety of exciting and immersive onboard youth, family, dining and entertainment experiences featuring the amazing world and words of Dr. Seuss.

“It is fun to have fun but you have to know how,” said the Cat in the Hat in the iconic Dr. Seuss book. The fun on Carnival starts in the main dining room during The Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast with the Cat in the Hat and Friends. Attendees will have the opportunity to kick off their day dining on playful foods straight from Dr. Seuss’s imagination – green eggs and ham, moose juice and goose juice, along with colorful fruit and pancake stacks, funky French toast and more, with traditional breakfast favorites also available. While Carnival’s wait staff set the tone with Dr. Seuss-inspired uniforms, popular Dr. Seuss characters such as the Cat in the Hat, Thing One and Thing Two, and Sam will be joining guests at their tables for fun interactions and one-of-a-kind photo opportunities. Hosted on the first sea day of each cruise, this special breakfast will be available for $5 per guest.

Every ship in the Carnival fleet will have a selection of classic Dr. Seuss books, toys and themed activities for children to enjoy. Special showings of beloved movies such as “The Cat in the Hat” and Dr. Seuss’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” will be shown outdoors on the giant screen of the Seaside Theater on Lido Deck as part of the cruise line’s Dive-In Movies programming. On Carnival Freedom, which is undergoing a major refurbishment in May, and Carnival Vista, which debuts in early 2016, there will be a Dr. Seuss Bookville facility (pictured above) -- a unique and dedicated Seuss-themed play space featuring iconic décor, colors, shapes and funky furniture inspired by the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss. The perfect place for families to relax, unwind and enjoy each other’s company, guests can read one of many available Dr. Seuss books or stretch their imagination through other family-fun activities including arts and crafts, toys and Dr. Seuss-inspired games.

Story time at sea will never be the same with the introduction of Seuss-a-palooza Story Time, A Rhyming Good Time – an interactive reading event that brings to life the colorful world of Dr. Seuss for kids of all ages. Hosted on a sea day each voyage in a custom-created environment on board or within Dr. Seuss Bookville, this memorable storytelling event will feature some of the most beloved Dr. Seuss characters.
At other times during the voyage, children and families will have the chance to meet and interact with favorite Dr. Seuss characters and participate in special photo opportunities featuring colorful and zany Dr. Seuss-inspired artwork, as well as through events and activities such as the Seuss-a-palooza Character Parade where guests can join Dr. Seuss characters in a swirly conga line along the Promenade. A variety of Dr. Seuss-themed retail items will be available, as well.

The Seuss at Sea initiative builds upon Carnival’s leadership position in family cruising. The line carries more than 700,000 kids aboard its fleet each year — nearly half of the total number of kids carried by the entire North American cruise industry.

“Our youth and family programming continues to be highly rated and extremely popular with the millions of families who sail with Carnival, but we’re constantly challenging ourselves to uncover unique and interesting ways to further enhance our guest experience,” said Mark Tamis, senior vice president of guest operations for Carnival Cruise Lines. “We are thrilled to bring the fun, whimsical and wonderful world of Dr. Seuss to life for our guests of all ages to create even more fun and memorable moments during our cruise vacations.”

“Dr. Seuss inspires imaginations across generations and encourages a playfulness and whimsy that is often lost in today’s ‘always on’ society,” said Susan Brandt, president of Dr. Seuss Enterprises. “We’re excited to be working with Carnival Cruise Lines to bring some of the timeless magic of Dr. Seuss to the families that sail each year. Seuss at Sea will let kids and parents alike explore their imaginations through the memorable onboard experiences we’re building together.”

Roll-out of the Seuss at Sea program will begin aboard Carnival Splendor in February 2014 with implementation across the full fleet by 2015, as well as Carnival Vista when that ship enters service in early 2016.

10 Flu Prevention Tips To Help Safeguard Your Family

$
0
0
It's that dreaded time of year—flu season. Protect your family from the weeks of misery that the Flu can bring, with these 10 tips for Flu prevention.

  • Wash your hands—The most effective way to prevent the spread of germs and the flu virus is to constantly wash your hands. For those occasions where you are unable to wash your hands properly keep a bottle of alcohol-based hand sanitizer (at least 70% isopropyl alcohol or 60% ethyl alcohol) nearby.
  • Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing—Rather than into your hands, try sneezing into a tissue (if handy) or into the fold of your elbow.
  • Avoid frequently touching nose, eyes & mouth—Even with frequent washing, your hands are still covered in germs, so keep them away from the most common germ entrances of the body.
  • Keep surfaces and objects used daily clean—The flu virus can live and be transferred on a variety of surfaces. So regularly wipe down desks, phones, tablets, doorknobs, counters, light switches, etc.
  • Eat right—Help your body fight off flu viruses with a well balanced diet filled with fresh fruits, vegetables and foods that are rich in Vitamin-C.
  • Stay active—Whether it is taking a quick walk or going to the gym, any type of cardio exercise will activate your body’s infection-fighting defenses and stimulate your immune system.
  • Sleep—Let your body recover and fight off any germs that may have gotten into your system by getting plenty of sleep.
  • Stay hydrated—Drinking fluids, especially water, is a great way to flush out any toxins that may have found their way into your system
  • Manage stress—Stress can affect your immune system, reducing your body’s ability to fight off the flu virus or other germs. Find ways to keep your stress low this winter season.
  • Get vaccinated—One of the most effective ways to protect yourself from the flu is to get vaccinated.

Kids Craft Tutorial: How To Make Ball Mason Jar Piggy Banks For Under $5

$
0
0

I have a confession to make: I am {slightly} obsessed with Mason Jars. They just have so many uses (aside from canning) and they are perfect for craft projects!

This past weekend my daughter and I made these super cute {incredibly affordable & simple} Ball Mason Jar Piggy banks. We made a Lion and a Pig however, you could easily make these into anything you want - a dog, a bear, a horse, a cow... whatever your creative heart desires!

What you'll need:

  • Paint brush
  • Scissors
  • Glue Gun with low temp glue sticks or Heavy Craft Glue
  • Modge Podge Hard Coat
  • 1 Mason Jar
  • Sheets of Craft Foam (in colors of your choice - depending on which animal you are making}
  • Acrylic Paint (in colors of your choice depending on which animal you are making)
  • Googly eyes
  • Pipe Cleaner (for tail - depending on which animal you are making)
  • 4 small wooden spools (sold in most craft stores -usually in a pack of 6-8 for $1)

How To:

  • Clean and dry your Mason jar(s)
  • Paint the jar and the ring to the lid (remove the center of  the lid- you are going to replace this with craft foam later) and 4 wooden spools. Allow to dry and apply a second coat.
  • After the paint has had adequate time to dry - apply a thin coat of ModgePodge Hard Coat over the paint on both the jar, the ring to the lid and 4 wooden spools . Allow to dry and apply a second coat.
  • After the Modge Podge and Paint have dried, trace the ring to the lid onto a piece of craft foam (in corresponding color depending on the animal that you are making). Cut out the craft foam and cut a small slit in the center for inserting money into the piggy bank. Use 5 small dots of heavy craft glue or low temp hot glue to affix the craft foam to the inside of the lid ring. Allow to dry and replace lid on jar.
  • Affix the 4 wooden spools ( as feet - 2 in front - 2 in back) to the bottom of the jar spacing them out by about 2 inches in the front and 2 inches in the back.
  • Affix your googly eyes and any other pieces - depending on the animal that you have chosen to make -with low temp hot glue or heavy craft glue. (We used colored sheets of craft foam to make a main for our lion and ears for our pig).
  • Create and affix the pipe cleaner tail (in your choice of color depending on the animal that you have decided to make) to the back of the jar using low temp hot glue or heavy craft glue.

You can also personalize these piggy banks by painting your child's name on the side or have your child draw their name on the side of the bank using a permanent pen.

**Craft recommended for ages 6+ - *** Parents should complete all steps of this craft that include the use of low-temp hot glue or substitute low-temp hot glue with heavy craft glue.

Happy Crafting!

Isabelle’s other classmates are equally talented, and she starts wondering whether she really belongs at her new school. She earns a role  in the fall festival, but she struggles during rehearsals. Can Isabelle learn how to focus less on those around her and more on her own dancing? With help from her sister and her friends, Isabelle may discover a unique talent that she can truly call her own.

Designs by Isabelle
Description: As Isabelle rehearses her ballet routine for The Nutcracker, she wonders if she’ll ever master her pirouettes, especially with her classmate Renata pointing out her every mistake. She tries focusing on the other parts of the production she enjoys: exploring the costume and props room and helping out with costumes for some of the younger dancers. But when Jade, her big sister who also attends Anna Hart School of the Arts, becomes moody and withdrawn, Isabelle taps into her design skills to try to find a solution for Jade. In the meantime, can Isabelle find the confidence to tune out Renata and perfect her own performance, too?

To the Stars, Isabelle
Description: Isabelle is doing great at the Anna Hart School of the Arts— her dancing idol Jackie Sanchez even invites her to go on tour! Isabelle jumps on board, but she quickly finds that the traveling show has its     challenges, not the least of which is bossy Renata who was invited to come, too. When the dance show suddenly starts falling apart, Isabelle tries to help Jackie pull it back together—and begins to learn more about a mentor who encouraged Jackie to dance as a young girl. As Isabelle taps into her talents to try to save the show, she not only discovers who inspired Jackie, but also how she, herself, can inspire those around her.

While Disney's The Pirate Fairy doesn't set sail on DVD until April 1, 2014 - we have some great new concept art and info on the newest Fairy to join Tinkerbell's world; Zarina.

Fashion designer Christian Siriano took on the task of designing the animated fashion concepts for Zarina and we think that he did a pretty fabulous job!

Check out some of the gorgeous concept art from the film and more on what Christian Siriano and Peggy Holmes (Director of The Pirate Fairy) had to say about bringing Disney's newest fairy to life.

Walt Disney Studios and Christian Siriano have teamed up to bring to life the newest addition to the world of Tinker Bell and Neverland in “The Pirate Fairy.” Known for his whimsical and show-stopping designs, Siriano consulted with the filmmakers at Disneytoon Studios on Zarina’s pirate fairy costume.
"I loved the challenge of this project. I haven't designed for an animated character before, and I'm excited to take my skills into Zarina's world. She's a unique and new character and I wanted to help make her memorable and iconic. Disney characters are everlasting and I'm sohappy as a young designer to help create a bit of Disney history".
                                                     - Christian Siriano , Zarina Costume Designer
"Zarina is a powerful character, able to run a Pirate Ship and we wanted her to be a strong, adventurous fairy. Christian is phenomenal at creating bold, amazing silhouettes that truly celebrate a woman for who she is – powerful, feminine and fierce. He was the perfect choice".
                                            - Peggy Holmes, Director of THE PIRATE FAIRY

Zarina, voiced by Christina Hendricks ("Mad Men") is a dust-keeper fairy that falls in with a band of pirates, including a cabin boy named James, voiced by Tom Hiddleston ("The Avengers"). “The Pirate Fairy” sets sail on April 1, 2014.

Oh Baby! 36 Weeks and Counting....

With just 29 days to go until my due date ( February 7, 2014) we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our baby boy. I had my daughter at 36 weeks, so he could make his debut at any time now

This pregnancy has had it's fair share of ups and downs - but I would do it all again in a heartbeat. With two older children (now 7 & 9 years old) this is sure to be a fresh experience for our family. Our first two were so close in age that everything came very easily.  When our daughter came along, we knew what to expect.  As we were fresh out of certain stages with our son, we were entering into those same stages with our daughter. They occupied each other and have grown to be fairly close friends (when they aren't at each others necks of course - it's a fine balance love hate relationship for sure). There will definitely be a different dynamic this time around.

Things are certainly different than they were when my first 2 were born. Just one example?  We have already "met" our baby via 3D ultrasound imaging (which - by the way - is pretty neat!).  Knowing what your baby looks like before they are born was a foreign concept for us. We (of course)  knew all about 3D ultrasound imaging. However, nothing can quit prepare you for the AWE that overcomes you when you experience it first hand. The technician rubs the wand across your stomach and reveals detailed - up-close imagery of your child. Just AMAZING!

While we have been anticipating the arrival of the newest member of our family, we have been gearing up for the big day with all of the essentials. I will be sharing some of my must have picks (and a Newborn Essentials Guide) in the coming weeks. Things have changed so drastically over the years! It has been a full-on adventure learning about the newest developments in the world of all things baby - and I am excited to share!

I hope that everyone had a fabulous holiday season filled with friends & family - Wishing you all a very blessed & happy 2014!

Newborn Essentials Checklist - Preparing For Baby + Free Printable Newborn Essentials Checklist

As I sit here awaiting the arrival of our 3rd child (any day now - or so they tell me!) I am amazed at how many things have changed over the years. My youngest just turned 7, so it's definitely been awhile. While we are absolutely loving some of the new products on the market - it's easy to get swept up in it all (and want to bring it all home with you!)

Looking over some of the options available today, I have become completely aware of how unnecessary most some of the purchases that we made with our first child were. They were adorable purchases - don't get me wrong - but practical and applicable in every-day life? Not so much. We definitely toned it down with our second child and are doing the same yet again, with the newest addition to our family.

It's easy to get sidetracked by the cuteness and buy everything that you see -- though reality soon sets in when space is at a premium in your home.  Lest we forget 7 & 9 year old kids can accumulate STUFF quickly too!

I so wish that someone would have given me a practical list of must-haves the first time around. It certainly would have saved a ton of money - and a ton of costly trial/error sessions too!

After narrowing down our purchases this time around - I created a Newborn Essentials Checklist packed with newborn must-haves (eliminating the frills). The items on this list will help you get through those first month's with baby peacefully; without breaking the bank and without requiring the purchase of a new home to store it all!

Print out the checklist and take it along with you to the store. {Hopefully} it will help simplify the buying process by helping you stick  to the essentials - and not get too carried away. Which is so easy to do when everything is so incredibly tiny and adorable and you are so incredibly hormonal!

You can print the free newborn essentials checklist by double clicking on the image below. Once the image opens on a new page - click it again to enlarge it to it's original size. Once enlarged - simply right click and select to print.

Happy Shopping and Best Wishes with your new bundle of joy!

7 Tips For Introducing Pets To Baby - Newborn Essentials

By Heidi Ganahl
Tips for Introducing Pets to Baby

1. Get started right awayStart working on helping your dog get prepared for the new little one’s arrival as soon as you know you are pregnant. If you wait until the last couple of months, you will have less time to devote to helping get your dog ready for the baby’s arrival. It will also help your dog by not overwhelming them with too many changes at once.

2. Take a training class- If your dog has not been to training in a while, it is important to take a refresher course. There are many commands that will be extremely helpful for you to use when the baby arrives. You want to ensure that your dog is able to understand your requests and respond in a timely manner once your baby arrives, so a refresher course will help both you and your dog.

3. Put the baby gate up now - You want to start teaching your dog boundaries, especially at the door of the baby’s room. You want to ensure that your four legged family member starts getting used to not being able to come everywhere with you. Practice going into the baby’s room and closing the baby gate so your dog can’t come in with you so they get used to seeing that behavior before your baby arrives. By the time your baby arrives, your dog will see it as a normal behavior and not something that is occurring just because of the little one.

4. Put baby items around the houseStart bringing in items that will be around the house when the baby arrives. Put a bouncy chair on the floor, bring in a high chair and other items. This will allow your pup to get used to seeing them. It is also a good idea to get a CD of a crying baby and baby noises and have your dog get used to hearing those.

5. Let Fido adjust to new smellsDogs have a very keen sense of smell so it is important to bring in items that are going to be used on the baby. Purchase baby powder, some diapers, and any other items you know you will be using that have a distinct scent. Your pup will acclimate to them and they will be part of their everyday experience before the baby even arrives.

6. Quality time - Spend a minimum of 10 minutes a day doing something with your dog that they enjoy. Play fetch in the back yard, go for a ride in the car, or simply spend time petting them.

7. Buy a baby doll - You will want to practice having your dog respond to commands and displaying good manners when you are holding the baby, so there is no better way to practice than to carry a baby doll. Sit on your couch and hold and talk to the baby doll and make sure your dog sits on the floor and doesn’t try to jump up, put the baby doll in the bouncy chair and get your dog to lay down next to it. Getting your dog practicing manners right away is a must.
