DIY Puppet Theater - Fun & Frugal Summer Kids Craft

$

My kid's celebrated their official last day of school this past Friday, so Summer is now in full swing in our home. While I certainly enjoy the relaxed schedule - there is still a definite need for some level of structure and routine. Both of my kids have Summer reading lists - so I thought it would be fun to extend on the reading fun with a fun Puppet Theater Kids Craft last weekend. This homemade DIY puppet theater was super fun to make and only costs about five dollars to make (the $5 price tag includes pop sticks for DIY puppets as well).

Supply list includes:

  • Paper (to draw puppets)
  • Popsicle Sticks
  • Crayons/Colored Pencils (we used Crayola Erasable Colored Pencils)
  • Scissors
  • Tape or Glue (to affix your puppets to the Popsicle sticks
  • Exact-o Knife (for cutting out 8" x 12" square for puppets -see images)
  • (OPTIONAL) Chalkboard labels (with adhesive back) - for showtime/now showing

We used a  Elmer's Tri-fold display board (project display board) and a few additional (simple) supplies. My children love asking me to draw their favorite characters and they color them in - so that's exactly what we did with the puppet theater. I sketched their current favorite's and they colored them in using Crayola Erasable Colored Pencils. You could just as easily print off some colored images of your children's favorite character's and decoupage them onto the puppet theater. We picked up the Tri-fold project display board at Walmart for $2.50 and a big back of Popsicle sticks for $1.99.

Having the kid's act out the story-line's of the books that they are reading also helps to ensure retention, so theirs an added educational benefit tho this craft/activity as well. Fun, educational, and frugal!

With 4th of July coming up next week, my two older children have been crafting up some fun and simple DIY 4th of July decor. We spent about an hour this afternoon making this super cute patriotic clothespin wreath. It's an easy kids craft and only costs about $5 to make.

What you need :

  • 80 wooden clothespins ( we found packs containing 36 each - for $1 at Dollar Tree)
  • Crayola Kids Paintbrushes
  • Crayola Washable Kids Paint (red, white, and blue) Paint 30 red, 30 white and 20 blue. Use 2 coats of paint -- on the face of the clothespins only.
  • Foam board or corrugated cardboard ( cut a 16"D wreath form that is 1/2" W) to clip your clothespins to. Use a small dab of wood glue or low temp hot glue to secure each painted clothespin to your wreath form (using a pattern of two red, two white etc. + a section top left using 20 blue).
  • 4-5 Wooden Stars  ( we found the stars pictured at A.C. Moore for .20 c each). Paint them white and use a small dab of wood glue / low-temp hot glue to affix to the blue section.
  • 10" piece of ribbon to create a simple hanger (see image above)

Note: Low temp hot glue / wood glue should be handled by adults only.

    Happy 4th everyone!

Fairy Garden In A Jar Terrarium Kids Craft Tutorial

There really isn't anything sweeter than lazy Summer days with my kiddo's. We have been spending most of our time over the last two weeks outdoors in the sunshine playing, and at the pool. My older two children are also steadily making their way through their Summer reading lists, and the Disney "The Never Girls" book series has totally captivated the attention of my 7 year old daughter. The story-line follows 4 girls as they adventure into the world of the Disney Fairies.  This is definitely a series to check out if your daughter's are into fairies and are currently reading at a chapter book reading level.

As The Never Girls books have reignited my daughter's love of everything Fairy related, I decided to do a fun little craft with her yesterday. She made this super-cute Fairy Garden in a Jar, using a Ball Mason Jar, a live succulent plant and a few other simple supplies. This is such a cute little terrarium and needs very little maintenance. Simply add a small amount of water with a dropper every few weeks, place the lid on the jar and keep it in a fairly sunny spot.

What you'll need to make a Fairy Garden in a Jar:

    • a 32 oz. Wide Mouth Ball Mason Jar
    • Small dropper (to water your Fairy Garden in a Jar once complete)
    • 1/3 cup of small pebbles (for bottom of jar to provide some drainage - save a few to fill in around the plant and two to paint as "mushroom caps"-optional- see image)
    • 1 1/2 cups of potting soil + mixed with 1 teaspoon activated charcoal (great for keeping terrarium plants healthy).  Fill the mason jar with half of the potting soil - place succulent plant in and use the rest of the soil to fill in around the plant).
    • 1 Elmer's Glue Stick (clear formula) - to affix "grass" and the Fair House to outside of Mason Jar.
    • Safety Scissors (to cut the "grass" and f
    • 1 piece of green construction paper (cut a 3" w x 10" L strip  and fray it to create the grass for your fairy garden - see image). Affix to the outside bottom of the mason jar as pictured.
    • Crayola Ultra-clean Washable ColorMAX Markers (we love the super bright colors of these markers!) to draw your Fairy House (see image)
    • 1 piece of white paper to draw a small fairy house (see image) - Affix to the Outside of the Jar using Elmer's Glue stick. Make sure that the picture is facing in so you can see it through the jar.
    • 5-10 colored buttons (to create "flowers" in the grass on the outside of the jar - affix with heavy craft glue or low-temp hot glue - optional (see image).
    Happy Crafting!

New Britax ClickTight Car Seat Technology Changes Car Seat Installation Forever

Parents, did you know this fact? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, three out of four children are either not securely fastened in their car seats or are in a car seat that is not properly secured to the vehicle.

That's why Britax has made it their business to ensure that parents can (easily) properly install their child's car seat every time, in every vehicle. As the leader in mobile safety for more than 70 years now, Britax announced this week that they have incorporated their game-changing  ClickTight™ Installation System to their most popular and versatile line of convertible car seats.

With ClickTight's revolutionary ease of use, every caregiver - from parents to grandparents to babysitters - can find confidence in the installation of their car seat, with the simple buckle of a seat belt. With the quick push and twist of a button, parents simply open the front of the car seat, buckle the seat belt across the labelled belt path and then click shut for a proper installation every time. No shoving, kneeing, yanking or confusion associated with complicated LATCH limitation requirements!
    Rear facing installation

For added protection, Britax also recommends that the tether be used when installing the convertible car seat.

    Forward facing installation

"Last year, we invented the game-changing ClickTight Installation System for Britax Harness-2-Booster Seats," said Curtis Strong, Director for New Product Development at Britax.  "Now, children can benefit from this enhanced technology from birth through toddlerhood. Families can rest assured that Britax is keeping their children safe and comfortable every trip."

Check out the Britax ClickTight Technology in action, in the video below.

The new Britax ClickTight Convertible Seats are as fashionable as they are safe. Thirteen new fabric choices ensure that families ride in style, and the Easy-Remove Covers allow convenient cleaning for parents without having to remove the car seat from the car.

Inspire A Love Of Reading Early With DK

    $

We place a huge importance on reading in our home. Over the past year, we have become more unplugged and in-turn, we have been more hands-on in our parenting approach. The benefits for our entire family have been and continue to be, priceless.

We {gasp} adios'd the tablets and handheld gaming systems about a year ago and never looked back. If you could only see the HUGE difference in our children's demeanor's, you would understand that it really was and is, for the best. Building a foundation for our children that is rich in knowledge and hands on activity / physical activity is what they thrive on (just as we did as children). It's developmentally necessary for our children to develop their critical thinking skills through play and hands-on learning experiences, first and foremost. Even with all of the amazing advancements in technology, we limit our children to 30-60 minutes of screen time a day.

One of the big changes that took place for us as we unplugged from the tether of technology, is that we now only read "real" books (bye-bye e-readers/tablets).

There's just something about the feel of a real book in your hands - it's completely unmatched by the e-reader/iPad experience, in my opinion. And bonus: it's better for your vision!
We have been reading a ton this Summer and we recently introduced our youngest little guy to some fun touch and feel board books and picture cards, by DK Publishing.

Our older two love getting down on the floor with the baby to read to him and it's been a blast watching him discover new thing's and different textures in Baby Touch and Feel Farm, Touch and feel Dinosaur (he gets a kick out of the sticky Dinosaur tongue - he laughs every time!), and Touch and Feel Sophie and Friends.

Each page offers a new sensory experience for little ones to explore,  with corresponding images and textures.

At 6 month's old (tomorrow!) - our little guy has become a big fan of Peek-a-Boo so, naturally Pop-up Peekaboo Bedtime (with hidden pop-up surprises behind each flap) is a hit! He's also all boy and he LOVES trucks and cars! Pretty much anything with wheels catches his eye and ignites a gleeful response these days. Being as such, DK's Trucks and Diggers grabs his attention each and every time. With fun pictures of every kind of truck/utility machine/digger you can possibly imagine, this book can capture his attention for a good ten minutes+ - which is eons at this age!

We recently introduced our little guy to DK My First Animals Touch and Feel Picture Cards too, and he absolutely LOVES them! Each card is sturdily constructed and has facts for the kids to read to him, along with a large brightly colored image and corresponding texture for him to touch and explore.

We love how sturdy these books and picture cards are.  Little ones can't rip the pages of these books and they'll withstand a considerable amount of drool too!  DK Board Books and Picture Cards are perfectly constructed with little ones in mind.

Check out these fun titles from DK (for ages birth - 3 yrs.):
      • Touch and Feel: Sophie la girafe®: Sophie and Friends ($6.99)
        • Sophie la girafe® has been a favorite brand among moms all over the world since the high-end rubber baby teether debuted in France in 1961. In this Touch and Feel book, babies can touch soft, shiny and bumpy textures while meeting Sophie and her friends.

      • Baby Touch and Feel: Farm ($5.99)
        • Baby Touch and Feel books capture the attention of the very youngest children and create an experience they’ll want to repeat. Simple, colorful images and large font labels encourage recognition skills, while padded covers with rounded corners make these books safe for baby.

      • Touch and Feel: Dinosaur($6.99)
        • Touch and Feel books encourage preschool learning through exploration of various topics such as animals, numbers and letters, and feature novelty textures and colorful images that promote hand-on playtime.

      • My First Trucks and Diggers
        • My First Tabbed Board Books will keep toddlers interested and enthusiastic about reading with 13 easy-grip picture tabs to help little fingers turn to fun-filled, colorful pages with imaginative photographic designs.

      • My First Touch and Feel Picture Cards: Animals($9.99)
        • My First Touch and Feel Picture Cards each include 16 colorful picture cards with bright photographs and textures to help toddlers develop early language skills. The included parent guide provides creative learning games to play with children.

      • Pop-Up Peekaboo: Bedtime ($9.99)
        • Exciting Pop-Up Peekaboo books promote parent and child interaction, memory and imagination, while hands-on play makes learning fun.

I told you guys - my older two love to read! Just check out all of the books that they have read so far this summer (4,000 + pages between them)! I definitely attribute their love of books to an early introduction to reading.

How To Save BIG On Back To School Shopping

    $
    0
    0

It's that time of year again - the back-to-school shopping frenzy is officially upon us! Before you head out to the stores to stock-up, learn how to save BIG on Back to School shopping this year - with these tips:

    • Take Inventory - Go through all of the office supplies you already have on-hand.  Check out the kids closets too. See what fits and what needs to be replaced. Donate any unneeded/outgrown clothing to a charity (such as Purple Heart or The Salvation Army). Many charitable organizations can also arrange to pick up your donation right at your front door - so it really couldn't be more  convenient! Keep in mind that your donation also amounts to a tax deduction (based on the fair market value of your donation) which in many instances, evens out to what you may be spending on your child's back to school needs.  It's a win-win for everyone!
    • Reuse/Repurpose: Let the kids DIY / decorate old folders/binders that are still in good shape from last year (printed/colored Duck Tape/ Glitter Glue etc. works wonders at revamping for the old, for the new school year!).  Also, don't buy an entire year's wardrobe in one shot. Buy a few key pieces to get them through the first few weeks of cooler weather that can also mix/match easily with their Summer attire (a great vest, some long sleeve graphic t-shirt's, a lightweight jacket etc.). Keep in mind, the weather doesn't abruptly change just as the kids are heading back to class. They will still get plenty of wear out of their warm weather wardrobe, with the help/addition of a few key layering pieces.
    • Check out local stores for amazing back to school supply sales, NOW. The deals tend to disappear after the first/second week of September, so make sure you have enough on hand for the entire school year, now! Staples, Walmart and Target offer amazing savings on supplies such as white school glue / glue sticks, composition books, filler paper, binders, crayons, colored pencils, markers and more! Even if you already have everything you need now, if you see a great deal on .25 cent Crayola Crayons or a great $1 deal on markers - stock up now - it will save you big $ later!
    • Check out coupon websites such as retailmenot.com and couponsherpa.com before heading out to the store! Also, be sure to check out the store websites for printable coupons. We recently shopped our local outlet mall for back to school finds and we saved HUGE by printing off coupons ahead of time. Gap Outlet had an " take an additional 40% off coupon" that applied to all sale and clearance items too! We snagged 4 pairs of Gap Kids Skinny Jeans from the clearance section for our daughter at just $4 a pair (after the added 40% savings!). We also took advatage of a deal at Adidas - we donated 3 pairs of gently worn shoes that no longer fit our kids, and they gave us $30 off of our purchase that day ($10 off for each pair donated)! Combined with the buy 1 get 1 half off sale that day - we made out great! Each of my older children picked up sneakers that were each on sale for $29.99. Normally the total would have been $59.98. The buy 1 get 1 50% off sale brought the total down $44.99; subtract our $30 off for our shoe donation made that day, and the total came to just under $15! Seriously - WOW!$15 for 2 pairs of Adidas Sneakers that normally would have set me back $60? And all for taking a few minutes to check out the deals before we left the house? Totally worth it! P.S. That Adidas "Refresh your Sole" deal is valid through August 28, 2014 - check out the details HERE .

    Wishing everyone a wonderful 2014 / 2015 school year!

Pocono TreeVentures Aerial Ropes Course & Zip-Lining - A Great Place To Explore With Kids

    $

Are you ready for an outdoor adventure of a lifetime? Head to Pocono TreeVentures!

Located in Stroudsburg PA, in the picturesque foothills of the Pocono Mountains, Pocono TreeVentures offers up an incredible suspended aerial ropes course. With varying levels of difficulty for both kids(ages 4+) and adults, this course is the ultimate playground for thrill seekers of all ages. They are also now home to 1,000 ft. dual racing zip-lines; the Zip Racer!

After grabbing your gear, the friendly and knowledgeable staff helps to fit your harness. Next, it's on to a safety course where you'll learn about the color coded tweezles, and how to attach/secure your clips and trolley (for the zip-line) to the lines. Finally, it's off to explore high above the ground in the trees, in their ropes course that's seemingly, straight off the pages of "Swiss Family Robinson".

Pocono TreeVentures' Aerial ropes course offers 5 levels of difficulty. We started in the beginners course and explored 2 levels that were age appropriate for our children. You can choose to explore the course as far you would like/ feel comfortable with (age permitting). Each level of the course presents a new challenge and the height of the course increases with each advanced level. The peak element is raised 30 feet off the ground! This impressive course is comprised of 66 elements in total, and sits on 14 scenic acres.
This is an amazing confidence builder for kids! As you make your way through the elements of the course,  you are completely in control and responsible for attaching / unhooking your own clips and trolley from the lines in the course.  Keep in mind, there is staff on-hand if help is needed, however, guests are largely expected to move through the course on their own. It was completely amazing to watch as our children gained more and more confidence in their own abilities and physical capabilities, as they moved through each element of the course!
As a mother, I was admittedly concerned about the safety factors upon arrival. Though I was quickly assured after going through the staff-lead safety course, and after learning more about the unique SAFE LINK Safety "intelligent belay" system used at Pocono Tree Ventures. Check out our kids zip-lining from element to element in the video below; they connected their own clips and trolley to the lines; they are 7 & 9 years old!

Overall, our visit to Pocono Tree Ventures was amazing! Friendly knowledgeable staff  and awesome course. Truly, an adventure like no-other!  We will definitely be returning for more fun with the kids this fall!

    More about Pocono Tree Ventures:
Spend the day up in the trees while you climb, balance and zip through the 66 elements of the Pocono TreeVentures aerial ropes course. Great for all levels of outdoor enthusiasts from beginner to expert, the family outdoor aerial forest adventure offers five courses of varying levels of difficulty. Pocono Zip Racer, 1,000 ft dual racing zip lines is now open and part of the park too! Each course consists of "bridges" between tree platforms that are constructed of rope, cable and wood configurations that challenge you with aerial tightropes, swinging log steps, moving platforms and rope net climbs. Be prepared to  see the world from above with the highest point of the advanced course being over 30 feet off the ground.

The course was designed and constructed by Outdoor Ventures Group builders of successful aerial ropes parks throughout the Country. Unique SAFE LINK Smart Safety "intelligent belay" System with double-connected safety clips that help keep guests locked to a safety line. Sited on 14 acres, the course takes guests through a series of experiences that allows them to move through the trees at varying heights and difficulty levels. You'll put on a safety harness and be given instruction by trained staff prior to entering the beginner course - then it's up to you to make it fun. Each course offers a different challenge level-try one, two or all five courses.

Tree Ventures Ropes Course and Zip Racer are open year-round, weather permitting.

Trend Spotting: 2014 Back To School Trends We Adore + $200 Target Gift Card Giveaway

    $
    0
    0

The new school year is upon us! My children kicked off the new school year today and we have been gearing up for the past few weeks. One of my favorite thing's about this time of year is spotting all of the fun new trends.

These are some of the top 2014 back to school trends that we are loving this year:

    • Tartan, Sassy, and  Pretty: This Fall, kids fashion is all about the plaids! This trend is mutual among boys and girls fashions too. It's not just your traditional green and red plaid tartan either! We've seen everything from the traditional red/green tartan plaid, to bold bright colors, to pastel plaids. Whatever your preference, this fun trend is great for mixing and matching this season. We also love all of the Houdstooth, stripes, and prints we are seeing this season! While floral prints are definitely big right now, ironic prints are also trending. Cute leggings with {adorable} mustache prints, hearts, rainbows, eyeglasses and animal prints - you name it, we've seen it. And we LOVE IT! Don't overdo it though.  Mix and match these fun trends with solid colors and add some great accessories. You'll be spot on this Fall!
    • ShineOn: Metallic's are back and better than ever this season. While we love this trend, we prefer metallic's in smaller doses when it comes to kids fashions. Think cute metallic accents or a great metallic backpack.  Even a cute metallic clutch purse adds the perfect touch to any ensemble.
    • So Fab: Add a bit of flair to any outfit with a cute leather jacket or leather accents. This trend is huge for girls this season. Not into the leather fad? Try accessorizing with an adorable suede purse with fringe or if you prefer this trend in smaller doses, try a leather cuff bracelet or a cute clutch purse.
    • For the Love Of Denim: Denim jackets are back in a big way this season! We are seeing a ton of fun colored and blue denim jackets this year for both girls and boys. This is a trend that goes way back to my early days so, obviously I have an infinity for this one.
    • Layer It: Layers are HUGE this fall in the kids/tween/teen fashion sector. Layer a cute plaid shirt over a graphic tee, and top the look off with a great vest (like the one pictured above) for the boys.  For the girls, layer a cute leather jacket or cropped denim jacket over an adorable plaid dress (like the one from L.L.Bean pictured above). Layering is a trend that works for both boys and girls, when it's done right of course.
    • Own It: Making your space your own while your at school has never been easier! Dress up your locker with an adorable locker chandelier. Wall POPs offers a version with a sensor that turns on when you open the locker door (and off when it's closed), and the magnetic attachment makes it a cinch to install/un-install! Kick it up a notch with a large locker kit from Wall Pops. These kits comes complete with locker "wallpaper" and accessories for organizing your space (all of which easily remove at the end of the school year). Large locker kits are available in a ton of fun print/color options too so, their is something for everyone.
    • For the greater good: Gearing up for the new school year while doing something good for others has never been so simple! While there are a ton of school supply companies that donate a portion of their proceeds to amazing charities (and we love them for it!), this year we are totally crushing on the bright pops of color and generosity of Yoobi! These fun  & fashionable school supply products can be found at Target retail stores nationwide and online at yoobi.com . For every product purchased - they donate a product to a school in need.
